Ebook About This book is about a man who wanted to drive around the world, to remote corners, to those places where few men have ventured before. He wanted to do it in a four-wheel drive, taking his own camper-trailer with him, to live at the edge of deserts and at the rim of tropical jungles, to drive the highest roads, and the lowest, to be free to make his own choices. He found a nut who wanted to do it with him, a picture editor of a leading man's magazine in New York, and the Trans World Expedition was born. This is their incredible journey. The did it, and how they did it is their tale told in his exciting book.Book Who Needs a Road: The Story of the Longest and Last Motor Journey Around the World Review :
This book was a great read. Very appealing to anyone who has traveled in developed countries, or want to know what it would be like. It really kept me on the edge of my seat. It's a REAL account - they really did it, back in the mid 60's, mostly as planned. A couple things struck me about their journey that could be teaching moments for anyone looking to do an overland adventure:1) Make sure you have double the amount of money you 'think' you'll need2) Pack light! Their advanced planning was good, but had they taken less 'stuff' with them, it would have been a lot less burdensome. The reduced weight would likely have resulted in fewer mechanical breakdowns of their trailer and reduced their exposure to theivery. I realize they were beholden to their sponsors to a certain extent. The breakdowns cost them significant time, money and energy that resulted in delays that otherwise might have allowed them to enter a few countries they missed out on due to borders being shut just before they arrived. In the end a lot of that 'stuff' got pilfered by theives, or they had to simply abandon. Any traveler should aspire to take the bare minimum, lay it out, then cut it half.3) Absolutely assess the integrity of your equipment that you HAVE to rely on - Getting outfitted with a Land Cruiser was a great move. Weather they should have taken a camper trailer in the first place is highly questionable. But all pull-behind pop-up camper trailers I have seen are astonishingly flimsy and light-duty in construction. How may times did they need to re-do the axles or the hitch? No spare inner tube? Repeated breakdowns cost them months, maybe. I realize it's easy with hind-sight to look back and flind flaws, but, that's the point of this part of the review, learn for their happenings.4) Take Cigarettes - That was a great move on their behalf. Amazing what it can buy ya.5) Being persistent - can get the traveler into places others say can't be done. Seen it with my own eyes a few times.6) Practice your conning techniques - These guys became great at conning people when it was required. They had to be. And it got them out of a few sticky situations. I never gave it a lot of thought, but their techniques and strategies are something an aspiring overlander should study carefully and assume they would need to use them.7) Their story points out that the best laid plans can be sidetracked in any number of unexpected ways. A traveler must retain a positive attitude and be flexible and alert to new opportunities that may suddenly come up to achieve your goal. The Off-Road Four-Wheel Drive Book by Jack Jackson would be a great read for any off-roader looking to do long-term overland adventuring. The author provides an uncountable number of specific tips and strategies gleaned from years of leading expeditions and overland excursions to prepare your gear and vehicle for the rigors of 3rd world roads. The tips would help to ensure the adventurers achieves the highest level of vehicle reliability and how to overcome roadside emergencies specific to the type one might encounter in developing world overlanding. There is something to be said of an adventurer sticking to local transportation (Trains, Busses, Hitchhiking, etc) rather than driving a personal vehicle. I realize it wasn't the point of their overland adventure, but, in general, for those wishing to seek adventure traveling in other countries, one has to weigh the trade offs of the ability to mingle daily with the locals using local transportation vs the continual burden and expense of managing a personal car and gear.Anyway, I give this book 5 stars and only wish I could have been on their adventure with them. You're not really on this trip, and you're glad of it. Steve and Al have gone as far as they can go to give you the virtual adventure without the pain. Not, however, without the fear, wonder, anxiety, shock, and delight of a real experience. They spare no detail, and you, the reader-traveler are the beneficiary. It is amazing that these people made it back alive. If it weren't for their names on the book, you'd think they couldn't possibly have survived the sharks, bandits, cliffs, jellyfish, customs, food, drink, treachery, disease, poison, thirst, famine, breakdowns, repairs, robberies, con-men, governments and beautiful women. The action is fast, the political commentary remarkably au courant, and the scenery out of this world.
